In a town that has only a handful of heritage buildings remaining, it is widely felt that it doesn’t look good on us as a community to ignore a heritage public hall that holds so many shared stories and memories of times gone by. We know that how we honour and value our past speaks volumes about how we might care for our future. The Civic Centre was built by volunteers who recognized a community need and their ‘can do’ spirit won the day. Now, 62 years later, many volunteers and community leaders have come together to raise the funds to ensure that the Civic Centre will remain a community gathering place for generations to come.
The current state of the building is “worn” but, reasonable given its age and provides sound “building blocks” to upgrade the entire facility, thereby extending its utilization for another life cycle. Where possible, the proposed system upgrades have been considered to address current deficiencies together with incorporating state of the art sustainable building practices. This will provide a cultural space which is not only safer, fully accessible and more comfortable for its audiences, provides a greater degree of flexibility in its programming and operations, and does so in a more efficient economical and sustainable manner.
